Most people burn glucose instead of fat for fuel because we eat so many carbohydrates. Our body prefers to be in ketosis.
Carbohydrates turn into glucose in the body. You can train your body to burn fat instead of carbohydrates. This metabolic state is called ketosis.
So how do you get into ketosis, and why would you want to do that?
So why would you want to burn fat instead of glucose for fuel? Many benefits include losing weight faster, having higher energy levels, and enhanced mental clarity. Our bodies perform better when we are in ketosis. Eating fewer calories than you burn does not guarantee weight loss.
There are three ways to train your body to burn fat instead of carbohydrates.
- Follow a strict ketogenic diet: high fat, low carbohydrates, and moderate protein. It takes 2-4 weeks for your body to get into ketosis and become keto-adapted. That’s when your body automatically burns fat for fuel.
- Do intermittent fasting, which limits the hours you eat during the day. For example, have a window of 8 hours when you eat all your food for the day and fast for 16 hours. You can easily accomplish this by skipping breakfast and not having snacks before bed.
- Take exogenous ketones. When you consume ketones, your body goes into ketosis within one hour. You don’t have to wait for your body to become keto-adapted. You get into ketosis right away and can reap the benefits.
The exogenous ketones I use are Pure Therapeutic Ketones. I drink one every morning. It keeps me in ketosis every day.
