She Didn’t See It Coming by Shari Lapena immediately pulled me in because the story didn’t point to a single obvious suspect right away. Instead, the book slowly introduced multiple characters, each with secrets and questionable behavior. I found that refreshing because many thrillers spend most of the story convincing readers one person is guilty, only to suddenly switch direction at the end. Here, the mystery constantly shifts as new details emerge.
This is an investigative thriller that follows several characters’ perspectives, which makes the story feel bigger and more layered. As the investigation unfolds, every character seems capable of hiding something.
Bryden Frost is a wife and mother living in a New York condo building with her husband, Sam, and their three-year-old daughter, Clara. One day, Bryden disappears while supposedly working from home. Alarm bells go off when she fails to pick up Clara from daycare.
Sam rushes home and discovers something unsettling. Bryden’s purse, keys, and car are all still there. Nothing appears stolen. It is as if she simply vanished.
Detectives Jane and Kilgour begin investigating the disappearance. Then the case takes an even darker turn when a cadaver dog discovers Bryden’s body stuffed inside a suitcase hidden in a storage locker in the basement of the condo building.
At that point, the story becomes a full homicide investigation with multiple suspects and countless secrets.
One of my favorite things about She Didn’t See It Coming was how many believable suspects there were throughout the story.
Lizzie, Bryden’s sister, spends her time anonymously participating in online true crime and Facebook sleuthing groups. There is also a man in the building with a troubling history involving accusations of assault. Sam becomes suspicious because he was missing from work for two hours during the estimated time of Bryden’s murder and has no alibi.
Even a seemingly random car accident Bryden had before her disappearance becomes important later. She rear-ended another driver and later met him privately to pay cash for the damages. Moments like this kept making me question everyone.
I liked that the story never settled on one obvious suspect for too long. Every time I thought I had things figured out, another detail changed my perspective.
Most of the thrillers I read focus on one main perspective. This book was different because we constantly move between characters’ thoughts and experiences.
That structure made the story feel more realistic and suspenseful. Instead of only seeing what one person knows, we slowly uncover pieces from many different angles. It also helped build tension because readers often know information that other characters do not.
The shifting perspectives worked especially well in an investigative story like this one.
She Didn’t See It Coming is not only about discovering who killed Bryden Frost. It is also about uncovering the secrets everyone around her is hiding.
The ending delivered several revelations that genuinely surprised me. Some of the new information completely changed how I viewed earlier events in the story. A few moments actually made me stop reading for a minute just to think about what I had learned.
I enjoy thrillers that can still surprise me late in the story, and this one definitely did that.
The only thing that did not fully work for me was the ending, which left a few loose ends. While I enjoyed the many twists and surprises, certain details near the end felt slightly unclear afterward.
However, that did not take away much from my enjoyment of the story. The multiple perspectives and constant shifts in suspicion were actually my favorite part of the book. They kept the investigation interesting and made the mystery feel more complex and realistic.
Overall, I really enjoyed She Didn’t See It Coming by Shari Lapena. The constantly shifting suspicions, multiple viewpoints, and steady stream of secrets made it difficult to predict where the story was going.
If you enjoy investigative thrillers filled with unreliable characters, hidden motives, and shocking reveals, this is a great choice. I especially recommend it to readers who like trying to solve the mystery alongside the detectives while constantly second-guessing themselves.
The final revelations were the strongest part for me. Every new detail added another layer to the story, and several twists genuinely caught me off guard. That made this a very entertaining thriller from start to finish.
If you enjoy suspense thrillers where secrets run deep, and the ending catches you completely off guard, you will love this book. If that sounds like your kind of read, you might also enjoy my review of Someone Knows by Lisa Scottoline, another thriller packed with hidden secrets and a shocking conclusion.
