I'm Brenda and I help AI Beginners to become confident in using ChatGPT and other AI Tools
Read more about me
Every AI tool seems to want $20 a month, and before you know it, those little charges add up. So how do you decide between free vs. paid AI tools? Honestly, I don’t sit down and build a spreadsheet to analyze it. My system is much simpler, and it’s based on real life. If you’re not techy and just want to know when it’s worth paying, this post is for you.
When I first started using ChatGPT and Claude, I used their free versions. I just talked to them, asked questions about what I wanted to know, and answered their questions so they could get to know me.
Then it happened. Right in the middle of a conversation, I got the message: “You’ve reached your limit. Try again in 4 hours.”
That’s my sign. When you hit that 4-hour limit, just upgrade.
That’s really my whole rule. I don’t try to predict whether I’ll need the paid plan someday. Instead, I use the free version until the limits get in my way. If I’m using a tool so much that it cuts me off, I’m using it enough to pay for it.
Not every tool has a 4-hour limit, though. With some tools, the paid plan just adds so many features that you know you’ll use them. In that case, it makes sense to upgrade right away.
For example, I use a tool called Viral Vue for my Amazon review business. I went straight to the paid plan because it added so much value, and I knew I’d definitely use it. I still pay monthly because I wanted to try it out first. But I really like it, so I’m going to keep going.

Here’s the other half of my system, and it’s a big one. When I upgrade, I pay monthly. I don’t pay for a whole year anymore.
I learned this the hard way. I hate looking ahead and seeing all the yearly charges coming up. Even worse, the renewal date sneaks up on me. I forget, and suddenly I’m charged again. Then I’m stuck for another whole year.
The same thing happened with memberships. Sometimes I’d be a few months in and think, “This is too much. I don’t want to use this anymore.” But I’d already paid for the year, so I was stuck.
Now, when I upgrade to a paid plan, I pay for one month and see how it goes. If I love it, I keep going. If I don’t, I cancel, and that’s it. No guilt, and no surprise charge a year later.
There’s another reason I pay monthly. With AI, things change almost every day.
For example, I follow a creator who sold a product showing how she used Claude with a video editing app. About a month later, she changed her mind and started doing it all with Claude on her computer, with no other app. That’s how fast this stuff moves.
So if the experts are changing their minds that quickly, you and I don’t need to lock ourselves into anything for a full year. Monthly gives you room to change your mind too.

Here’s what I’m paying for right now and why. As you’ll see, each one has a real job.
I use ChatGPT for everyday stuff. If I have a general question, I go to it. I even use it as my health coach.
ChatGPT also helps with my other business. Besides my AI business, I’m an Amazon Influencer, which means I review products on Amazon’s website. I also share those reviews on my YouTube channel. ChatGPT is great at images, so I use it to create my YouTube thumbnails.
If you’d like to see my product reviews, you can follow me on YouTube or check out my Amazon storefront, Sapphire Merchant.
I originally did my social media posts in ChatGPT, but they just weren’t that great. So I decided to give Claude another try, and I found it’s much better at some things.
Now I use Claude just for business. It helps me with social media posts, blog posts, and similar work. Next, I’m going to have Claude edit my videos too, and I’m really excited about that.
At first, I thought I was paying double for the same thing. But the truth is, each serves a different purpose. ChatGPT handles my everyday questions and my images, and Claude handles my business.
So before you cancel one, ask yourself, “Am I using them for different things?” If the answer is yes, you’re not paying twice. However, if you use them for the exact same tasks, you probably only need one.
Wispr Flow is a voice-to-text tool. That just means you talk, and it types for you, right inside whatever app you’re using. I hold down a key, say what I want to say, and it shows up as clean text.
The best part is that it cleans up the way I talk. If I say “um,” it takes it out. If I repeat a word, it takes out the extra one. It turns what I say into real sentences and natural paragraphs, so I don’t have to go back and fix it.
I use it every single day instead of typing. When I checked the pricing, I realized I could probably get by on the free plan. But it doesn’t cost much, and I use it so much that it’s worth it. That’s a great example of my rule in action: daily use earns the paid plan.
Metricool is a social media planner. In other words, it helps you plan and schedule your posts ahead of time.
I just started using it, so I’m still figuring it out. I’m on a monthly plan, so I’ll give it a real try and let you know what I think. And that’s exactly why I pay monthly!
Quick note: I’m an affiliate for Wispr Flow and Metricool, so I may earn a small commission if you sign up through my links, at no extra cost to you. I only share tools I actually use.
Now, I’m not completely against yearly plans. I do pay yearly for Grammarly and Canva. But there’s a reason.
I’ve used both of them all the time for years and years. I know I’m not going anywhere. So for me, a yearly plan only makes sense after I’ve proven to myself I’ll use a tool long-term.
In short, test first, then commit. Never the other way around.
If you want to keep it simple, here’s my whole system:
The truth is, no one answer is perfect for everyone. The right AI tools for you depend on what you actually use every day. So start free, upgrade when you hit the limit, and pay monthly until you’re sure.
