I'm Brenda and I help AI Beginners to become confident in using ChatGPT and other AI Tools
Read more about me
If you’ve started exploring AI, you’ve probably heard of ChatGPT. It’s the tool that put AI on the map for most of us. But lately, another name keeps popping up — Claude. So now you’re wondering: are these the same thing? Do I need both? Which one should I actually use?
I’ve been using both ChatGPT and Claude, and honestly, this ChatGPT vs Claude question comes up a lot. The short answer is that they’re different in some really useful ways. The longer answer — well, that’s what this post is for.
Let me walk you through what each tool does well, how they feel to use, and which one might be the better fit for you.
ChatGPT is made by a company called OpenAI. It launched in late 2022 and quickly became the AI tool everyone was talking about. Chances are, if someone in your life has tried AI, they started with ChatGPT.
It has a free version that’s easy to sign up for, and it feels very conversational — like texting with a really knowledgeable friend. You can ask it almost anything. I used it for a long time to look up product information, get diet advice, and research topics I was curious about. Honestly, it’s so much faster than scrolling through Google search results trying to find what you need.
ChatGPT also has a paid version (called ChatGPT Plus) that gives you access to extras like image generation and web browsing for up-to-date information.
Claude is made by a company called Anthropic. It’s newer to the scene, but it has been growing fast — especially among people who use AI for writing.
When I first tried Claude, it felt a little more formal. My first impression was that it seemed more geared toward business use. However, once I started using it regularly, I realized it just has a different strength. Claude is really good at longer, more detailed writing tasks. When you ask it to write something, it writes in full paragraphs — like an actual document — instead of giving you a quick bulleted list.
Like ChatGPT, Claude also has a free version and a paid plan.
This is where it gets interesting. These two tools are not just copies of each other. They have genuinely different personalities and strengths.
ChatGPT feels more personal. Because I’ve been using it longer, it has picked up on a lot of my preferences over time. I don’t have to type in a lot of background information about myself every time I start a new conversation. It feels like talking to someone who already knows me a little.
Claude is better for writing. When I need to write something long — like a blog post, an email, or a book review — Claude is my go-to. It writes in a way that sounds natural and flows well. ChatGPT, on the other hand, tends to keep things short and simple. It often responds with small bullet-point lists, which is great for quick answers but not ideal when you need real depth.
ChatGPT is great for research and quick answers. When I want to look something up fast — a product comparison, a health question, a quick explanation of something — ChatGPT is excellent. It’s like having a search engine that actually talks back to you in plain English.
Claude can feel more thorough. If you give Claude a writing task, it doesn’t cut corners. It gives you something you can actually use with minimal editing. For that reason, I’ve started relying on it more and more for my blog posts and longer writing projects.
Here’s my personal recommendation, based on my regular use of both tools.
Start with ChatGPT if you’re brand new to AI. It’s a little more approachable, feels very conversational, and is great for everyday questions. Use it the way you’d use Google — but smarter and faster.
Switch to Claude (or add it to your routine) when you need to write something. If you’re working on emails, blog posts, product descriptions, reviews, or anything that needs real sentences and paragraphs, Claude is going to serve you much better. The writing it produces is noticeably more polished.
The truth is, you don’t have to choose just one. Both tools have free versions, so there’s no reason you can’t use both, depending on what you need. That’s exactly what I do.
To make this easy, here’s a simple breakdown:

Both are good for:
The best way to figure out which tool you prefer is simply to use them. Sign up for the free version of each and give them the same task. Ask them to help you write an email or research something you’ve been curious about. You’ll feel the difference pretty quickly.
If you’re just getting started and haven’t tried ChatGPT yet, I’d suggest beginning there — I wrote a beginner’s guide to ChatGPT that walks you through exactly how to get started.
